Fun online quiz games or information-siphoning schemes?

During the summer months, we find ourselves spending more time planning alternative safe ways to enjoy time off and away from the office. But in your moments of scrolling through social media, news articles, and blogs, be weary of quizzes and other games that could be information-siphoning schemes.  Let’s dive in and start our online scam myth busters.

Below are popular myths and truths about information-siphoning schemes. Click on the plus “+” symbol to learn if it’s the truth or a myth:

Thoroughly review any online quiz before answering personal information questions like, “What is your pet’s name?” and “What street did you grow up on?”

Truth! It may seem harmless, but these quizzes could gather personal information to use for hacking or other harmful purposes. If the quiz is asking for information like this, we highly recommend you do not complete the quiz.

Download apps and click on links presented in online news articles or posts shared by friends.

Myth! You have the control to download and click on links you consider safe. Never click on links or attachments in an email or website unless you are sure of its authenticity. Watch out for shortened links, especially on social media.

Myth! “Fun” quizzes that promise to spot your perfect mate, assemble a bank-heist team, or test your hometown loyalty are often just information-siphoning schemes.
